My Hypnotherapy Journey with George Lewis Hypnotherapy
Updated: Jan 14, 2020
I’m no stranger to discussing my ongoing journey with my mental health, I tried many ways to improve my mental health with some success. You can see some of my achievements here.
Something I have been interested in for many years is alternative therapies, this comes from my background as a massage/aromatherapy/ spa therapist. I have been wowed many times by the effects of natural remedies and I’m always willing to give them a try.
There was a time when hypnotherapists were seen as some eccentric magicians who waved a swinging watch before your eyes, putting their victims into a trace where they lose all control, its nothing like that. We are now seeing the benefits of clinical hypnosis and its no surprise that in the last ten years we have seen a surge in this popular therapy.
Hypnosis, in one form or another, has been used as a method of helping people successfully recover from issues and problems for generations. It provides a key to the subconscious mind to help people achieve their goals and has been successfully used to help them manage pain, emotional distress, achieve success, and even overcome phobias, anxiety and depression. It is the mind that controls our bodies and emotions and tapping into this fundamental fact is what makes hypnosis so powerful.
When George Lewis Hypnotherapy in Edinburgh got in touch with me and said he would like to offer me some sessions to help with some of the fears I have been experiencing in return for a little help with getting his business online, I suggested that we write about the journey we go on together as I know that you, dear readers would love to hear if I can combat them.
We started with the free consultation which was about an hour long, I manged to go along by myself, but the very lovely George says he’s happy for the person to bring a pal for some support. I could tell that George has seen it all and was very adaptable.
He took basic information and I didn’t feel the questions were too prying which made me feel at ease as I didn’t have to go into the deep depths of my past or bring up anything that was distressing. He asked me what I wanted out of the sessions and I asked simply to not panic anymore at the mere mention of sickness. Emetophobia is a fear of vomiting or seeing others being sick which I have suffered from badly in the last few years. I fear of being out of control while my children are being sick and have a fear of being sick in public, which has triggered avoidance behaviours. For instance, I have been unable to leave home if there are any tummy bugs going around, I have been known to keep my daughter off nursery, so she avoids it.
George explained simply what he did, He focuses on the solution, rather than the causes. It's all about the present and the future, and not the past. Research shows that the SF model can help people make significant and positive changes relatively quickly. Everything he said made sense and I was feeling really good about starting the sessions.
Next week I will be on the couch Where I would happily go into trance, this is not a new experience for a daydreamer like me so I am pretty confident I will. Trance is a course very ordinary in many ways. We go into trance many times a day, when we are driving, watching television, out for runs etc; we do it all the time. Trance is when the two minds come together and focus on the same thing and when we are in that state, we have access to the subconscious mind. That’s going to help us enormously and it’s the easiest thing in the world to contrive etc, etc.
He gave me a 25-minute sound track to listen as I headed away, which I have listened too as I have fallen asleep the last couple of nights. I defiantly went into trance, but I was told that if I didn’t that was OK too.
It will be two weeks till our next session, and I will keep listening to the sound track till then.
